Corn Gluten Corn gluten meal is one example of a product that is allowable under the City of Peterborough Pesticide Bylaw as a weed control.  Corn gluten, when used as recommended, can stop weed seeds from germinating.  It is made from corn and processed into a pelletized product which is easy to apply to the lawn.  It must be applied in a certain amount in order to be effective, but then lasts for up to six weeks in the soil.  It is also a good source of natural nitrogen for grass roots.  Do not apply corn gluten at the same time as grass seed, as it will also stop grass seed from germinating. Instead, apply corn gluten in April, or as soon as you can walk on the lawn without leaving tracks, then wait 4-6 weeks and apply grass seed.  If your lawn is already thick and healthy, another application of corn gluten may be warranted.  Ask your lawn care service provider for details, or call Peterborough Green-Up's Natural Gardening Hotline at 745-3238.
