Refrigerators are one of the biggest energy guzzlers in the house. They are on all the time, even when we are away, and we rely on them to keep food cool enough not to spoil. There are many tips available to help you make the most of your energy dollar, such as keeping the freezer full, but allowing air circulation ( ie. space) in the fridge itself. See the Links section below for more of these.
When shopping for a new fridge, don't necessarily go for the most expensive one. Do look for the EnerGuide label, and especially an EnergyStar qualification. EnergyStar qualifed appliances exceed federal energy efficiency expectations by at least 10%.
Woods is a fairly local company (Guelph, Ontario) that specializes in refrigerators. Also ask your dealer about where Whirlpool products are made-they are another Canadian company, but they do manufacture both here and in the U.S.
You may wish to ask your dealer about a take-back policy as well. Some manufacturers will take their used appliances back for recycling. Sometimes the dealer will reuse appliances themselves. Appliances contain valuable materials such as metals and plastics that should be reused and reuseable.
