Alternative Building Techniques
Conventional building techniques, while designed to make building easier and faster and with other advantages in mind, are not always designed to be environmentally friendly. Products are often treated with chemical compounds whose effects on our health and the environment are unknown. A good example of this is pressure treated lumber, which was used for years before it became clear how toxic it can be. Lead paint and asbestos insulation continue to be a cause for concern even though neither has been available for sale for almost a generation.
Using natural products in your building or construction project may seem like a pipe dream, but fortunately, it is a concept that is very real for several builders in this area.
Rest assured, this is one category of the Green Shopping Guide that will get better and better as more natural building techniques are explored. For now, we list Straw bale construction, as it is gaining in popularity in the mainstream and we have a number of straw bale experts local to the Peterborough area.
