Around the House
This section of the Green Shopping Guide addresses indoor home issues. Products which we are most likely to purchase for our homes include furniture, appliances, electronic items and décor. Services such as carpet cleaning and event rentals can also be found here.
We have tried to minimize overlap between this category and the Building and Construction category, so if you do not find what you’re looking for here, try looking there. However, constructive comments on this site are always welcome. If we are missing something that you think should be here, please let us know.
Be sure to think about whether or not you actually need the item before you buy it. Yard sales and Classified sections are good places to look to keep items out of the landfill.
Always remember when shopping:
1. Is the product durable, or will it and its packaging end up in the landfill?
2. Is the product made/available locally, supporting our local economy and reducing transportation costs?
3. Does the product contain/emit toxins?
4. Did the product require energy to make? Will it require energy to operate/maintain?
