| Compostables One third of the average household’s waste is compostable kitchen scraps and yard waste. Composting turns this organic material into a valuable soil conditioner that will improve the health of your garden and yard.
Composting is the single best thing most householders can do to reduce waste. Half of all City and County households are already doing it. The City works with local retailers to offer composters at a subsidized price. The County has composters available to residents through their office at 470 Water Street in Peterborough and most of the local municipal offices or waste sites in the Townships. Residents should call ahead to ensure supplies are on hand.
The Ecology Park (located beside Peterborough Utilities in East City) sells composters and compost canes. Peterborough Green-Up sells a variety of additional composting aids such as specialized compost turners. Green-Up also offers delivery and installation of subsidized composters to households participating in its Green Garden Visit program. Green-Up publishes fact sheets on all aspects of backyard composting and runs regular composting clinics.
The County has fact sheets on composting available upon request. Peterborough Green-Up has information available on various aspects of composting and vermicomposting and holds vermicomposting workshops. Give Peterborough Green-Up a call to sign up!
